What is Mediation?

Confidential The mediators will not tell anyone what was said during the mediation process; except information indicating that someone is in danger, such as child abuse, abuse of a vulnerable adult, or credible threats of violence.

Mediation is a conflict resolution process in which mediators help participants have a difficult conversation, get clear about what’s important to everyone, and make decisions that meet the needs of those involved. In mediation, people speak for themselves and make their own decisions.

Non-Judgmental -  The mediators will not take sides, place blame, or tell you what to do. The mediators will not require you to make a decision.

Voluntary -  Participants are at the table of their own free will and can end the process at any time. No one will be forced to do anything they do not want to do in the process. Nobody will be forced to to agree to anything they do not want to agree to.

Our
Story

In 2003 the Community Mediation Initiative (CMI) was founded as part of what would become the Bosserman Center for Conflict Resolution at Salisbury University. In 2015 TCM became the freestanding nonprofit organization, Tri Community Mediation, to more inclusively serve the entire Lower Eastern Shore community. In addition to mediation, Tri Community Mediation offers free 1-hour conflict management presentations, training opportunities, and regular in-service events for volunteers, staff, and the communities of Somerset, Wicomico, and Worcester counties. TCM is largely funded by grants and donations. Funders include: the Maryland Judiciary’s Mediation and Conflict Resolution Office (MACRO); the Community Foundation of the Eastern Shore; Community Mediation Maryland, and others.

Dave Nemazie has extensive experience in university administration, partnership development, and public relations. He is passionate about environmental science and received a MS in marine sciences through the University of Maryland College Park. Dave joined the TCM board in 2023 after seeing the value of mediation in opening dialogue toward mutually beneficial agreements.

Abigail Horton has filled many roles at TCM since becoming a mediator in 2010. She has completed many advanced trainings and is a certified Level 6 mediator through CMM's Performance Based Evaluation process. Abigail serves on TCM’s Board of Directors as well as working at Salisbury University as a Library Assistant. Some of her favorite things are cooking for friends and family, watching Star Trek, and reading mystery novels.

Helena (Lena), a volunteer mediator and former TCM staff member, advocates for collaborative discussions on community challenges. She promotes free, confidential, and voluntary mediation as a vital resource. Additionally, Lena is active in Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., NAACP (Wicomico County Branch), and serves on the boards of the Chipman Cultural Center and Meditate and Thrive Kriya Yoga Center.

Jessica's initial position at TCM was as an AmeriCorps team member, providing support to the center during the challenging times of the pandemic, before taking on the role of Mediation Coordinator. Currently, she is a board member at TCM and actively volunteers as a mediator. On any given day, you can find Jessica gardening and gathering herbs with her children, as well as tackling home projects with her partner.
